Rookies Galore
June 25, 2003
The Mets have finally decided to go with youth. They have rookies at 1B (Jason Phillips), 3B (Ty Wigginton), shortstop (20 year old phenom Jose Reyes) and three in the rotation as of now (Jae Seo, Jeremy Griffiths and the recently called up Aaron Heilman).
Heilman will pitch Thursday in his MLB debut against Dontrelle Willis and the Marlins. Griffiths, who pitched Saturday in a game that was eventually washed out, will pitch this Saturday in one of the two games against the Yankees. Seo, who has a cracked fingernail, will pitch friday.
Reyes is hitting only .180, but he is showing flashes of his potential. He hit a grandslam off of Jarrod Washburn and nearly hit a 3-run homer off of David Wells on Sunday. He drew his first walk on Tuesday.
It is only time before Armando Benitez and Roberto Alomar are traded. Alomar is apathetic and doesnt seem like he cares to play on a poor team. Benitez blew Sunday's game and is hated by Met fans. Boston is interested in Benitez.
