Glavine Really Stinks
August 03, 2003
Questec or not, tom Glavine has been absolutely atrocious for the Mets. He missed his start on Sunday due to a strained rib cage (insert joke here) and Jeremy Griffiths took his place. Griffiths, the 25 year old rookie, pitched seven innings, allowing one earned run. He was lifted after seven, and Dave Weathers promptly gave up three runs, but despite his tries, he couldnt blow Griffiths' first win.
It is unknown if Glavine will go on the DL as of yet.
Jason Phillips, who has played virtually every day, may miss a day or two because his wife is due to give birth to their first child, Jason Jr. If the birth occurs tonight or early tomorrow, Phillips could be with the Mets when they play Houston at Minute Maid on Tuesday.
Al Leiter has been on fire for the Mets since coming off of the DL, winning three games after going back to his signature cutter. He had tried to pick up some finesse pointers from Tom Glavine, but it wasnt working for him.
Armando Benitez was traded to the Yankees, and since the Mets have been going with a closers by committee ever since. Of course, they haven't really needed to utilize a closer too often.
Jeff Duncan, who had come up from AA Binghamton and set the base paths on fire, hurt his leg on a slide on Friday night, has sat since. The Mets say it is due to his leg injury, but the inside word indicates that he is taking time to study pitchers and get back his rhythm.
Roger Cedeno has been on fire, but I'd stay wary of a guy who has been so terrible the past two years for the Mets.
