History

Derek Jeter’s whole life he dreamt of being a Yankee. On May 29, 1995, that dream came true when he made his major league debut. After struggling, he was sent back down to AAA. The next season he was named the starter at the beginning of the year, and won rookie of the year honors by batting .314 with 10 homers, 78 RBI, 104 runs, and 14 stolen bases. He was showing signs of being the ultimate five-tool player. He was living his dream.

His Game

Jeter is a tremendous first pitch hitter who’s just as capable of hitting the ball over the right field wall as he is of beating out a grounder to the left side. Hitting in the two hole this season, he has had increased plate patience with 44 walks, compared to just 56 in all of last season.

He’s not the speediest guy in the league, but his base-running instincts make him one of the best base runners in the league. This season he has swiped 21 bags while being thrown out just once. In the field he has a great arm, but there have been some questions about his range. His range factor (putouts plus assists per nine innings) is in the lower half of the league.

Last Season

Though he didn’t show it, Jeter suffered through minor injuries throughout all of last season. His .311 average was the lowest since he hit .291 in 1997, and he turned the least double plays and had the least amount of assists of his career. His base-running instincts were still keen, as he stole 27 bases and was caught just three times.

As usual, he was a major part of the Yankees playoff run, and was money at crunch time. He earned the nickname Mr. November by hitting a game-winning homer in game six of the World Series, just after midnight on November 1st. He was also money in the postseason on defense, making a shovel pass to home to stop the Athletics from scoring the go-ahead run in game 3 of the Divisional Playoffs.

2002 Outlook

Jeter has one thing on his mind: winning. He’s never satisfied unless the Yankees win the Fall Classic, and he’s going to be highly motivated this year after losing to Arizona in game seven last year on a ball that went over his head. He’s a hard worker, and bases all of his success on if the team wins or not. Without the nagging injuries he suffered in 2001, the expectations were high for Jeter.

This Season

He’s displayed increased plate patience this season, but he’s also struck out more. He’s on pace to strike out 113 times, compared to just 99 each of the past two seasons. His OPS, at .833, is 66 points lower than his career average. Look for a strong second half as he will elevate his game with the Yankees fighting for the division title.

Fantasy Perspective

If he were playing ten years ago, he’d be in the top five fantasy players, let alone shortstops. But because of the class of shortstops he’s in, he’s often overlooked as a top fantasy player. A-rod obviously tops out the shortstops, but Jeter will steal you 25 bases and hit 20 home runs every year, while hitting at least .310. You would think increased plate patience would contribute to less power this season, but he’s on pace with his career average. He is always amongst the league leaders in runs, because of the lineup he has to support him.
