History
Trevor Hoffman was drafted and brought up as a shortstop. When he realized he wasn’t going to make it as an infielder, he decided to try pitching since he was a pretty good pitcher in high school. His results would say that the switch worked out pretty good for him. He’s the only pitcher in Major League history to record five 40-save seasons and he’s saved the most games of any active pitcher. His best year was in 1998 when he recorded 53 saves in 54 opportunities.
His Game
He’s known for having a 90+ mph fastball, but now-a-days he usually throws in the 87-89 range. He compliments that with a slider that is nothing special, but another pitch to look at. His specialty is his nasty changeup that many believe is the best in the league. He’ll throw his changeup on any count, and will throw it repeatedly to a batter.
Last Season
After a terrible 2000 season, Hoffman rebounded nicely by saving 43 games in 46 chances. It appeared that batters might have been looking for his changeup constantly, as his walk and home run rate were extremely high.
2002 Outlook
While he’s obviously aging, he’s still considered one of the best relievers in the game. He needs to develop his slider or curveball to keep hitters from looking for his changeup exclusively. This is essential since he can no longer throw the fastball by hitters. He’s on the Padres so when they win they’ll be close games, so he should have plenty of opportunities.
This Season
While not extraordinary, he’s been solid this season. With 28 saves and a sub-3 ERA, he’s looking as good as ever. Hoffman has developed his breaking ball, and that has been a tremendous help towards his successful season.
Fantasy Perspective
Hoffman still remains one of the best relievers in the game. If you don’t overrate the importance of closers, he can be 100% solid for your team. With the presence of another closer, he can absolutely carry your team in saves.
