History
Josh Phelps was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 10th round of the 1996 draft. Born in Anchorage, Alaska, Phelps grew up in the smalll town of Rathdrum, Idaho. He's not a daft guy either as he graduated fourth in his Lakeland High class of 150 with a 3.94 GPA.
In his first two professional season, Phelps struggled to hit for average but showed flashes of jaw dropping power. In his 3rd season, he improved his plate discipline drawing more walks while also raising his batting average. In his 4th season, he finally put it all together hiting .328 with 20 homers at Single-A Dunedin (FSL).
At the end of 2001, Baseball America named Josh Phelps Toronto's top minor league prospect. At Double-A Tennesse, he led the league in doubles with 36 and homers with 31. He also increased his patience drawing a career high 80 walks against 127 strikeouts.
In 2002, Phelps was tearing up Triple-A when he was called up mid-season to be the Blue Jays starting DH. Some scouts questioned Phelps ability to hit major league pitching but Phelps hit from the get go and proved his critics wrong. He was voted AL Rookie of the Month in August and September; and he ended up finishing 6th in the AL ROY voting.
2003 Outlook
Phelps' fantasy value is hurt due to his lack of positional eligibility. He only qualifies as a DH and doesn't look like he'll gain any eligibility at 1B in the near future (2 games in 2003). Phelps has had problems in both of his knees and the Blue Jays aren't going to risk losing Phelps' bat by putting him behind the plate.
Phelps hasn't been as consistent in his sophomore season but he's showing some signs of breaking out. He had a 9 game hitting streak in May, however his strikeouts are up on the month. Phelps has maintained his solid walk rate which shows in his .354 OBP; however he's striking out once every 3.3 at-bats. Phelps is currently on pace to hit 19 homers and 71 RBI; but I think he'll heat up in the next few months and should hit 25-30 homers and 80-90 RBI.
Phelps' power is unquestionable as evidenced by his fifth deck moonshot at the Skydome last season. In the long-term, Phelps should develop into one of the best designated hitters in the game with 40-homer power.
