White Sox - 7/30/02
July 29, 2002
BY MARIO SCALISE
LATEST TEAM INFO
RECORD: 50-56
PLACE: 2nd
GAMES BACK: 14
It's amazing what a few trades to cut payroll and get the dead weight can do to a team, as they picked up their first sweep this week since April beating the Royals. First Durham, then Lofton, then Alomar, then......? Not sure yet, but a deal or two is on the horizon before 12:00 midnight hits on July 31st. Rumors have Howry and/or Foulke to both Boston and the Giants, or a possible deal with the Mariners that will send Valentin packing. Either way, the young guys are taking over.
TRANSACTIONS
Ray Durham to Oakland for minor league pitcher John Adkins
Kenny Lofton to San Fransisco for minor league pitchers Felix Diaz and Ryan Meaux.
Sandy Alomar to Colorado for minor league pitcher Enemencio Pacheco.
Sox call up second baseman Willie Harris, third baseman Joe Crede, and catcher Josh Paul
QUICK VIEW
Who to Watch/Add/Drop
#1- WILLIE HARRIS- 2B/CF (ADD)
There were two reason's for the Durham trade: One to get rid of salary, two to allow Harris to play full time. Since, he's shown a lot of potential with his patience, speed, range, and strong hands making the ball jump off his bat. He'll see the majority of his playing time at second, but will get a few starts in center pending the situation.
#2- AARON ROWAND- OF (ADD)
With Lofton dealt, Aaron Rowand has once again recieved a starting job. How long will it last? Well, atleast he was able to play one game this time around. Rowand should get most of the PT with the rest going to Willie Harris. With no other CF on the team and the only other option being the not yet ready Joe Borchard, it's basically Rowand's job to lose.
ROTATION OUTLOOK

vs. E.Milton (12-7, 4.89)
8/2 - G.Glover (4-5, 4.20) Career Versus Devil Rays: 0-0, 0.00 (3.1 IP)
vs. T.Sturtze (1-11, 4.91)
8/3 - UD (Ritchie? Biddle?)
vs. P.Wilson (2-7, 4.11)
8/4 - M.Buehrle (13-7, 3.63) Career Versus Devil Rays: 4-0, 2.91
vs. J.Kennedy (5-8, 4.63)
8/5 - J.Garland (8-8, 5.46) Career Versus Devil Rays: 2-0, 2.77
vs. L. De Los Santos (0-2, 12.60)
Both Buehrle and Garland have worn down these past weeks, while Wright and Glover have looked stronger and stronger. Garland is claiming he has a dead arm and is up against the Twins offense so hold him off. Buehrle is coming off some shaky outings, but is scheduled to go twice this week, once against the D-Rays. Start him still. Ritchie is nursing inflammation in his pitching and may or may not return. Either way, bench him if you haven't dropped him. Glover has been a pleasant suprise of late and should pick up some good innings against the D-Rays.
OFENSIVELY SPEAKING
-Lohse is 2-0 with a 3.14 ERA in 14 1/3 IP vs the Sox this season.
-Mays is 6-0 with a 2.67 ERA in 67 1/3 IP vs the Sox, however he's coming off injury and is facing a retooled Sox offense.
-Milton has gone back and forth with the Sox. Ordonez and Thomas take a liking to him.
-Kennedy is 0-3 with a 6.93 ERA in day games. His game is scheduled for 12:15. Nice.
-Wilson is 0-1 with a 1.59 ERA against the Sox in 11 1/3 innings. Has not won since May 12th. He could very well be due.
-Sturtze 6-2, 2.77 ERA in August. 1-1, 3.52 ERA lifetime vs Sox 15 1/3 innings. Sturtze has been on hard times this year. Despite a respectable ERA, he hasn't been able to buy a win thanks to a weak D-Ray offense.
LOCAL PERSPECTIVE
The fans ripped GM Kenny Williams for the Durham a trade. Reason? He recieved a 2 pitch pitcher with a 6.00 ERA coming off arm surgery. That for a two time all star. Since then, he's recieved three quality arms for two aging vets. Fans have given up on the season and are now waiting to see the development of yet another youth movement.
THE MINOR REPORT
Soon enough, the minors will be empty. With Harris, Crede, and Paul up, and Borchard and Jiminez not too far away, the minors are also in a retool mode with arms like Diaz, Meaux, and Pacheco entering the mix.
