BY MARIO SCALISE
LATEST TEAM INFO
RECORD: 53-61
PLACE: 2nd
GAMES BACK: 16
The White Sox and GM Kenny Williams managed to pull off one more deal before the July 31st deadline trading reliever Bob Howry to the Red Sox for two more minor league pitchers. As far as the Sox on the field? The energy and fundamental play has improved with the coming of the young guys, but the results are still the same. The Sox are still considerably under .500 and even further behind the Twins.
TRANSACTIONS
Sox trade reliever Bob Howry to Boston Red Sox for minor league pitchers Frankie Francisco and Byeong Hak An, both of Single A Sarasota.
Sox recall lefty pitcher Mike Porzio from AAA/Charlotte
QUICK VIEW
Who to Watch/Add/Drop
#1 - GARY GLOVER- SP (ADD)
Glover is 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA since the break in 4 starts. He's gone past 7 innings in each of his past two starts and threw 112 pitches his last start, a season high. He will likely remain in the rotation with the demotion of Todd Ritchie to the pen.
#2 - JOSE VALENTIN- 3B/SS (DROP)
With Crede seeing full playing time at third and Clayton batting .304 since the break, Valentin will see limited playing time. He was initially supposed to start at short with Clayton on the bench, but a neck injury and .167 average since the break has sidelined him. Even if he starts, the only use he will serve is his versatility.
ROTATION OUTLOOK
8/7 - G.Glover (4-5, 4.35) 2002 Versus Angels: 1-0, 6.00
vs. K.Appier (9-9)
8/8 - R.Biddle (1-2, 4.61) 2002 Versus Angels: 0-0, 3.38 (2.2 IP)
vs. A.Sele (8-7)
8/9 - M.Buehrle (14-8, 3.77) 2002 Versus Mariners: 1-0, 1.50
vs. F.Garcia (12-7)
8/10 - J.Garland (8-8, 5.19) 2002 Versus Mariners: 1-0, 0.00
vs. J.Halama (5-3)
8/11 - D. Wright (7-10, 5.74) 2002 Versus Mariners: 1-0, 4.15
vs. J.Baldwin (7-7)
Glover should be held onto, but definitely picked up. As said, he will stay in the rotation the rest of the way. Buehrle=Start. Garland would be a safe start, while Wright is interesting. He hasn't pitched effective enough to warrant the time, but has given up just 7 runs in over 20 innings pitched against the Mariners.
OFENSIVELY SPEAKING
-Appier is 3-2 with a 2.91 ERA since the break. 6 of his 9 wins have come on the road. In his last 8 starts against the Sox, Appier is 6-2 with 3.91 ERA.
-Sele has compiled an ERA over 7.00 at Comiskey park and is 2-2 with a 5.40 ERA against the Sox since 1999.
-The Sox scored 3 runs in 6 1/3 innings off Garcia on opening day, but are 1-4 against him lifetime. Garcia scuffled out of the gait this half, but has given up just 5 runs in his last 14 innings pitched.
-After a strong May and June, Halama has tailed off a bit, but is 3-0 lifetime against the Sox.
-Baldwin was buried in his last start giving up 6 runs in 3 2/3 innings for the loss.
LOCAL PERSPECTIVE
Willie Harris has recieved some attention quick, while Frank Thomas is on page one again. After failing to slide at home on a play at the plate, resulting in an out, teammate Carlos Lee criticized Thomas. Thomas responded saying that Lee, who has made his fair share of baserunning blunders this year, should be the last one to talk. This is the second time this season and one of many issues that have revolved around Thomas' dedication to winning.
THE MINOR REPORT
John Adkins, who was acquired for Ray Durham, had a good debut giving up 3 runs in 7 innings of work for AAA Charlotte. pitcher/outfielder Brooks Kieschnick has been taken off the mound for unknown reason and has been used at DH.
